Notes

Big Ideas

My philosophy for math is that it is better to understand the big important concepts and ideas, than to memorize a bunch of formula. I wrote this set of notes in hope of helping students do that, so it is not meant to be a complete summary of the course material.

I also included some comments from my looking at the homework problems and quizzes, such as useful techniques and common mistakes. It will be updated from time to time, as the class progresses. Feel free to email me if you would like certain concepts broken down and explained.

Formulas

Midterm 1 Formulas
Midterm 2 Formulas
Finals Formulas

Memorize them! (Or understand them well enough so that you don't have to.)

Past Exams

Online Programmable Calculator

Here's a useful free online programmable calculator powered by Octave, good for tedious computations such as approximating integrals using Simpson's rule.

To compute, say Q5 of Section 7.7, you can use the code

function y = f (x)
t = x*pi/8;
y = t^2*sin(t);
endfunction
(pi/8)/3*(f(0)+4*f(1)+2*f(2)+4*f(3)+2*f(4)+4*f(5)+2*f(6)+4*f(7)+f(8))
